So if you want to go start your successful career in SEO, then this guide is for you.
Let’s get started.
How does SEO work?
Search engines are utilized by people when they have a question and search the internet for the answer. Search engine algorithms are computer programs that look for signs to give searchers the exact results they are looking for. Search engines rely on algorithms to discover web pages and determine which ones to rank for any given keyword. There are three steps on how search engines work:
- Crawling, which is the discovery stage.
- Indexing, which is the filing stage.
- Ranking, which is the retrieval stage.
How to start a successful career in SEO?
Build Up Your SEO Skills
Before even considering applying for any SEO-related job, you must ensure that you have the required SEO knowledge.
Please spare some time familiarizing yourself with how search engines work; after all, this is what SEO is all about; to optimize a website for search engines to rank higher in the search results.
Get to know the different elements that make up the SEO process like on-Page SEO, technical SEO, and Off-Page SEO.
Ensure that you understand SEO terminology, including critical expressions like link building, keyword research, backlinks, black hat SEO, white hat SEO, and any other terms you read in SEO-related topics.
Improve Your Writing Skills
One of the essential SEO tasks is to optimize the page title, headings, meta description, and content of a page. You cannot do this strongly if your writing skills are not ample.
If you wish to work with US or UK customers and English is not your first language, you need to take a class or find other ways to enhance your English writing skills.
It may sound like a voluntary step for now, but you will recognize its value when you start doing SEO copywriting work.
Procure Basic Development Skills
You are not required to be a developer for becoming an SEO expert, but you need primary development skills.
You need to possess the ability to work with popular CMS like WordPress to edit the titles and descriptions of a page and other SEO-related settings (permalinks, comment settings, sitemaps, etc.).
Part of your job responsibilities will guide developers to make SEO-related changes to a website, so you need to know what to ask for.
Grow Up Your Analytical Skills
You will have to make reports for the client or your supervisor for any SEO work you do.
A good SEO report blends information from different sources like
Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Semrush.
You must have the required skills to read, evaluate and present this information in a basic format.
Knowledge of the tools like Excel and Google sheets is a must.
Learn How To Use Seo Tools
The right SEO tools can simplify your life, provided that you know how to use them correctly.
Besides being familiar with the absolute necessary (Google Analytics and Google Search Console ), you should also learn how to use and configure other tools of SEO like:
Yoast SEO – This is considered as most popular SEO plug-in in the market. Understanding how to use Yoast SEO will not make you an SEO expert, but you cannot be a pro if you don’t understand the ins and outs of Yoast SEO.
SEMRUSH – This is by far my suggested SEO tool. It’s a tool I use daily for several tasks, including keyword research, PPC campaigns, competitor analysis, link building, and many more.
Chrome Developer Tools – these are a set of developer tools built into Chrome. You can use them to inspect the HTML code of a page.
Other SEO Tools provided by Google are Page speed insights and Lighthouse.
Thoroughly Go Through Google Webmaster Guidelines
Google has a set of rules called the Google Webmaster Guidelines. In this report, they describe everything there is to know about their quality standards and regulations.
SEO can sometimes be complicated, and if you are not well-known with Google guidelines, you might do something that will get your website (or worse, the client’s website) penalized, which means a loss of rankings and traffic.
This is something that you might be asked in an interview, so spend some time reading and understanding the guidelines.
Get Practical, Create Your Seo Experience
I have mentioned earlier that the job role of an SEO is not limited to knowing the SEO ideas and theory, but it’s mainly practical.
With or without an SEO certificate, with or without a formal education, to become a successful SEO expert, you need to practice SEO and prove to your future customers or organizations that you can quickly improve the rankings of a website in the SERP’S.
A company or SEO agency will pick you not because of your qualifications but because of your experience and ability to increase the rankings and increase organic traffic and consumers.
The best way to create your SEO expertise and learn Search engine optimization is to practice SEO. If you do not have a website yet, then this is your first step.
Select your niche, do your keyword analysis, and start a website as soon as possible.
Work on your own web site’s SEO and try to get rankings of it high for N number of keywords as you can.
There will be many hindrances in the way, that’s confirmed. Don’t give up early; learn from your mistakes and keep your work until you get some excellent results (in terms of organic traffic).
This can be your passport to secure your first client or your first job as an SEO.
Become Google Ads Certified
Search engine marketing is not only about SEO, but it’s also about Paid Search Advertising, and Google Ads is the most famous PPC platform in the market.
While your primary focus is to learn SEO, knowing how Google Ads work will help you better understand how Google works.
Google Ads are displayed on top and below the organic results; it’s good to know what circumstances and under what situations an ad can appear higher than the organic results for a particular keyword.
SEO and Google Ads work excellent together, and it’s also added chance for you to demonstrate your expertise and offer a broad range of digital marketing services to your customers.
Get Your First Client
As I have already mentioned in step 6, you need to build your SEO experience by creating and doing SEO work on your website first.
Once you feel convinced that you know what you are doing and already have some excellent outcomes, it’s time to take it a step further by obtaining your first client.
Your primary goal at this stage is to examine your skills in a real-life scenario and enrich your CV with hands-on experience.
Go to job portals like Fiverr, Upwork, and PeoplePerHour and register for a freelancer account.
These gateways have hundreds of SEO jobs listed daily.
Filter the applications and apply for SEO jobs you can execute based on your current knowledge and expertise. Keep your charges low to secure several contracts.
Remember, your goal at this point is not to make a living as an SEO freelancer but to gain working expertise and get ready for upcoming job interviews.
Get Ready For The Seo Interview
When you have your SEO facilities built up and proof of your working expertise, the next step is to plan for the SEO interview.
As an SEO agency, we have done many hiring SEO’s several times, and we are always looking for unique things.
Other agencies might look for the same things, so follow these tips below that will help to increase your chances of getting your first job in SEO.
When you are asked to introduce yourself in an interview, make sure to discuss examples of SEO work you did for customers (or your website). It is more important than anything else.
Then you can also mention any SEO Certifications or SEO courses that you followed.
Be ready to answer questions regarding Google Webmaster Guidelines and few questions like:
“Do you need backlinks to rank a website high in the results?”
“How would you optimize a page for a particular keyword.”
“How long does it take for SEO strategies to Work?”
